Most of us Canadians are off tomorrow for Remembrance Day... I'm very grateful for the paid, mid-week break! And the sleeping in :-)
Sunday I didn't spend or drive. Monday was a no spend day also. Today I was bad though... I went and got groceries (just a few items we needed: oj, crackers, lettuce, cocktail sauce) and threw in a magazine. Have you checked out the magazine racks lately?? I love the glossy covers full of holiday recipes and treats. I think with taxes it came to like $6... ouch. I remember when magazines were like $2 each. Total bill, including the mag and a $2 donation, was $19.60.
I spent a couple hours after work helping my mom can some bar clams. They come in 5 pound bags that just need to be cut in smaller pieces, then rinsed a few times, put into pint-size jars and on the stove for about 3 hours. I did the math and when they're bought prepared like this (as opposed to bought as a whole clam in the shell and having to do all the dirty work) it works out to about $5.60/pint. Bought whole would have saved maybe $1 to $1.50/pint. And if we were to buy a jar from a fish market, it'd be at least $8-10. They are very, very good in chowders, dips and casseroles so definitely worth the splurge once in a while. We still have some from the last time we bought some, so I didn't go in with my parents this time, but my mom said she'd drop off a couple pints tomorrow :-)
I need to give my Christmas shopping more thought as I only have 20 days left to finish!! I'll probably put the tree up on December 5-6th, then I hope to only have to think about food until the 25th!! Stress-free holidays are the way to go!

I am one of the unfortunate Canadians who will be working tomorrow...so sad... but I intend on taking my moment of silence in the morning...
Magazines are so.freaking.expensive. I stopped buying them and the only one I get is Real Simple which I got for a $5 subscription through amazon.
Nope...I have to work tomorrow. *sigh*
Which sucks because I kind of like watching the Remembrance day stuff.
I hope to have a job that pays for days off some day....
I'm just not motivated for Christmas this year! I've started a list, and have a budget, but I'm just not ready...
Good for you for being so prepared!!!
why do you only have 20 more days? christmas isn't until the end of december?
magazines are expensive. that's why I stopped buying except if I have to be on a flght/train or whatnot. but I gotta admit, I still love picking up Cosmo every now and then for a readthrough.
Oh how I've missed your blog! The canning clams sounds very interesting!
Webgrrl and Jessie, that sucks... we should all be off!
me in millions, I wish I could find cheap subscriptions through amazon... Real Simple is a great mag, I get it from the library sometimes.
FT, glad you're blogging again too!
AsianPear, I'm trying to be done everything by December 1st... that way I won't make any last minute impulse (and expensive!) purchases...
did you enjoy your day off today!!
I like your idea about being finished shopping by December 1st, I would like to think I would be finished by then as well.

You are organized! That's awesome. I have my cards 99% done (need 5 more + stamps) but my idea for gifts is frustrating me a bit right now. I've decided to make calendars, but the online place I'm considering keeps changing the savings percentages, so I'm going to have to go elsewhere at this point.
Can't believe it's already so close. Again!
I don't buy mags anymore, either. Ridiculously priced, but I have a bunch (i.e. A LOT!) that the library was getting rid of. They're old, but who cares?
NLA, I love magazines so much I don't mind if they're a bit old also!
Gill, yes, I really enjoyed this mid-week day off :-)
In the US, we call it Veterans Day now (formerly called Armistice Day here), and many of us don't get it off, although most governmental offices and banks are closed.
I've got a Christmas package that i need to send to the UK, but missed getting to the P.O. on time today (closes at noon on Saturday).
That's all right, i can wrap a few extra things to put in the goody box before sending it on its way. Some little things to open and some comestibles.
DH will be here next weekend, when we'll celebrate Thanksgiving (about a week early for here), and he wants to put up the Christmas lights then. Makes sense to do it before the snow arrives.
I got some Christmas wrapping paper today as i realized that all that i have is at the other house, and DH already will have a full car coming up this trip. It sounds so corny, but i really got into the Christmas spirit buying giftwrap. I plan on getting cards started soon, but i have to locate the address book first.

megan, I can't wait to hear what you think of the Maine winter!! Sounds like a great weekend you guys have coming up :-)
We have to figure out how far we are from each other... I'm 6 hours from Bangor??
