I am always more motivated to focus on my finances when I have specific goals in mind. Yesterday I sat down and calculated how many months away I am from my 40th birthday. Still a few years away, so it took a bit of calculating, but I came up with the # of months, a goal for a special fund I want to have, and I know exactly how much I should save each month to achieve it.
I think it will be traumatic for me to reach 40... so I would love to be somewhere on vacation when this occurs. For many years, I've been wanting to do a whole vacation centered on cooking classes, either in Provence or Tuscany. From what I've researched so far, it's definitely not cheap. The 3 that I would be leaning towards are On Rue Tatin (loved the book!), Patricia Wells or Epiculinary. And while I'm at it, I'd probably take some kind of work option through my employer, meaning special self-funded time off that doesn't use up my normal vacation time so I could stay an extra few weeks.
Why not dream big while I'm dreaming anyway? :-)
A big, big thank you........

speaking as someone who is turning 40 in 2 months, I hope it's not too traumatic. A great goal for you though and something very exciting for you to look forward to.
Speaking as someone who has already passed the "40" milestone, I assure you guys it's not nearly as traumatic as you think! Seriously! Look at the amazing things you've accomplished (this far!), look forward to all the amazing things you still have to do! Celebrate by doing something fabulous and wonderful, but don't start bumming yourselves out before you even get there!! :P
40 is awesome.
That sounds incredible. What a great idea. It turns something you're not looking so forward to into an exciting chance to realize a lifetime goal. Good for you!
I'm so excited to be turning 40 in a few months. :)
I've decided that my 40's will be my time and I'm going to have more fun and play in my life.
I love the fact that your going to save for a big trip to celebrate. Spending a month somewhere learning to cook would be a blast!
That sounds like a really great trip! I like the idea of figuring out how much to save each month to get there. Plus, you'll be looking forward to your birthday and not dreading it!
This is such a brilliant idea. It's a long way until I'm forty (bet it still flies by) but if I think I could easily put aside £50 a month from 25 to 30 and save £3000 for some amazing trip of a lifetime.
Can't wait to find out what you do!
What a great dream, sounds fantastic! Good luck :)
Thanks everyone! Yes, I know 40 is just a number, but I hate that time goes by so fast and not only am I getting older, but my parents are too... (we all know all the medical issues that can bring). I was given a great compliment the other day, some old guy told me I looked about 23 :-)
I hope I am not taking on too many goals at once, there's just so much money to go around, after all, but I'm going to do my best!
The sidebar will be updated each month :-)
I'm 31, so I've just passed that 3-0 milestone. It's a little weird to not be in my twenties anymore, but I'm fine with it. I'm sort of looking forward to my 40s because my kids will be older and more independent then and I think my husband and I will have more time to spend with each other. My youngest will be 18 when I'm 45, if I'm doing my math right. lol
I love this goal!!!! I personally have something similar and you motivated me to post about it.
Good luck on your goal because it sounds so beautiful and exciting. Keep us posted on this.
I think it's good to have goals. I didn't find turning 40 all that traumatic. I was more traumatised when a few weeks before my 35th birthday, gravity suddenly tweaked my body downward. No lie, it felt as if i went from looking okay to Saggy Maggy overnight. Since i was exercising a lot then, running 5K every other day, lifting weights, etc., i didn't think that my body would droop. An older friend of mine told me that the first cut's the deepest, after that, no biggie. Just another notch on the cog. This was just a new cog.
My forties have been my best decade to date thus far. I had wanted to be debt free by 40. That didn't happen for a variety of reasons, but we made the goal right before we turned 47 (DH and i are the same age). Then i wanted to pursue a dream, which cost $$$, so i'm back with debt again. I hope it all goes away by the time i'm 50--the debt that is. I want to be living the dream by 50, and it looks like that might happen!
